Lights on, lights off

I was on a coaching call this week with a client building her entire Kit setup from scratch.

She has two audiences, a solid lead magnet, and a plan to serve each audience segment.

And right in the middle of the build, she stopped me:

"Wait...I tag people when they're in a sequence, but I forgot to untag them. I don't want them getting broadcasts while they're already in my welcome emails. Can you help me figure that out?"

100% Yes!

I've had so many Kit Creators ask me, "how can I make sure I'm not sending too many emails at the same time.

No one sets this up wrong on purpose, but here's what happens:

Your newest subscriber who just raised their hand to hear from you, lands in your welcome sequence.

Then your regular broadcast goes out.

So in day one, they get two emails from you stacked right on top of each other.

It's not exactly the welcome you were planned, and now you look like some weird guy at a party who's over-sharing.

The fix is adding a Do Not Disturb tag.

Think of it like a lights-on, lights-off switch.

Someone enters a sequence → the switch flips on → add the Do Not Disturb tag.

They finish the sequence → the switch flips off → remove it.

That simple!

Then you build your broadcast segment to go to everyone except the folks who have that tag.

If they've got Do Not Disturb, don't send the broadcast.

If they don't, they're free to send to.

There's one nuance to help build a little breathing room into your flow. Hit reply and I'll send it your way.

Your subscribers should only ever get the emails you meant to send them. Not whatever happens to collide on the content calendar.

So take a peek under the hood of your own account.

Do you have a Do Not Disturb switch, or is your welcome sequence quietly colliding with your broadcasts?

Here's to welcoming people the right way!

P.S. This was just one piece of a much bigger build we knocked out in an hour. Over the next few weeks I'll walk you through a few more of the moves from that session — the ones that make a Kit account basically run itself. Keep an eye on your inbox.

P.P.S. I've been enjoying the SuperHuman newsletter lately. It's a quick read that is helping me stay ahead of what's trending. Right now you can grab their 200+ Claude prompts (they've helped me improve my workflows). Check it out here.
