Your biggest fans get hit hardest

"I love your stuff, but I can't handle this volume."

That's what a subscriber told one of my clients after getting seven emails in about 30 minutes.

Here's what happened:

  • They opted into something,
  • Then they bought something,
  • Then they opted into three more things,
  • and took one other action.

Each of those steps kicked off an automation. Every automation was doing its job... and they all fired at once.

Last week I said if something keeps happening, automate it. I still mean that. But once you have a few automations running, they start bumping into each other. (We've all done this.)

The part that stings is that this usually happens to the people who are your biggest fans.

Black Friday is coming fast. Before launch season, take some time and map where your automations collide:

  1. List every automation and what starts it. Every form, every product, every tag.
  2. Walk through it like a superfan would. Sign up, buy something, grab two freebies, all in the same afternoon. Count how many emails you'd get.
  3. Decide what goes first. If someone's in your welcome sequence or a launch, use a "do not disturb" tag to hold the other emails until they're through.

Your biggest fans deserve your best experience. Mapping the overlaps is how you give it to them.

Here's to keeping your biggest fans happy!
