Your cleanup automation might be deleting customers

There's a decent chance your list cleanup automation is quietly removing people who have paid you money.

I recommend every client have an automated way to re-engage (or remove) cold subscribers. Your list should earn its keep.

But there's one mistake I see over and over.

People forget to screen out past customers.

On a recent Kit Coaching Call, one of my clients was screening for customers. The problem was, not all of her past purchasers were actually tagged as customers...

So her cleanup automation was lined up to cut people who had bought from her, but hadn't opened an email in 30 days (durning the summer when they're likely on vacation).

We could have fixed it the old way by opening one browser tab per tag, manually bulk tagging, and spending whole afternoon of clicking. It would have worked.

Instead I had her open Claude with the Kit MCP connected and paste this prompt:

"Go through my Kit tags and look for any tags that have 'purchased' in the name. Let me review the list. Our next step will be to tag all those subscribers as customers. Ask me any questions you have before we begin."

That last line is the one doing the work.

Claude came back with three questions about the nuance, we answered them, and it ran.

Over 3,000 customers tagged in under a minute. Not one of them accidentally removed from her list.

But here's the part I want you to catch.

The MCP solved her backlog. It didn't solve the problem behind the problem, making sure this fix never has to be run again.

That one took ninety seconds and no AI at all. We created a rule that applies the customer tag the moment someone joins her membership.

Simple as that.

AI is so stinkin' good at the grunt work you've been putting off, but it's no substitute for fixing the system that created the grunt work.

If you've got grunt work hanging over your head, go test AI on it this week. Worst case, you're out ten minutes.

So, quick question...

On a scale of 1–5, how confident are you that every single person who has ever paid you is tagged as a customer in your email platform?

Hit reply with your number.

Here's to never deleting a paying customer!
