Let them sort themselves

A hand sifting through a box of vinyl records

Here's a question worth sitting with...do you actually know who's on your list?

Not the vanity number.

The real breakdown.

Who wants what.

Because if you send every email to everyone, you're stuck doing one of three things.

  • Killing your deliverability rate,
  • Boring half your list with stuff that isn't for them,
  • Or, sitting on great content because it's "only for that segment."

This past month I've walked you through the four foundational pieces I built with a client during a one hour coaching call:

  1. The Do Not Disturb switch,
  2. The Lego-brick approach,
  3. The Evergreen Engine,
  4. And today's lesson makes all of it smarter.

It's all about letting your subscribers sort themselves.

This client I worked with serves two totally different audiences. Two kinds of people who need two different things.

So instead of guessing what to send them, we let them tell us.

The obvious move is a link trigger, "Click here if you're a DIYer, click here if you're a web designer." It's recommended by all kinds of "gurus" and even Kit...

It works...until it doesn't.

The open secret is bots and "fake" opens.

An education or government domain hits your email, and their security scanner clicks every single link to make sure it's safe.

Kit records those clicks if you haven't told them to filter these out (seriously, go check your Advanced Settings to filter bot clicks).

Suddenly half your "web designers" are spam filters that never read a single word.

So besides turning on bot filtering, I recommend my clients use a Bot-Proof Poll

Kit polls doesn't tag anyone off the click alone. They only record the choice when a real human lands on the polling page and actually submits their preference. This one tip keeps your segments stay clean.

When someone picks their answer, you don't just dump them on a bland "thank you" page...send them somewhere useful.

Give them your best resources for their specific segment, show them affiliate offers that add to their experience (and your bottom line), share links to your top YouTube videos for their path.

Now they've told you who they are, AND they're one click deeper into your world, getting a quick win.

That's your Effortless Flywheel: they raise their hand, you hand them exactly what they need, they stick around for more, and every email after that gets more relevant, your products and services are a natural solution to their problem, and you rinse and repeat.

So there you have it. The four Lego bricks that snap into one system that runs itself.
